Teen and adult influence on teenage drunk driving

Would you let your teenage son or daughter drink alcohol? Or even worse, let them get behind the wheel? Parents don’t realize the danger they’re allowing their kids to go through. Kids in their teenage years are always going to parties. What the parents don’t know is that there’s going to be alcohol and drugs at these parties. Teens don’t take many things seriously, and because they don’t they’re careless, do wild things, and not even think them over. Some parents give their teens to much freedom and this can have horrible outcomes. In my opinion it’s both the teens and the adult fault.
Many teens in fact do go to parties. At these parties they encounter drugs and alcohol. When at these parties they feel the necessity to appeal cooler to their friends and older peers. Their peers as well think there doing good by pressuring them into drinking. All is fun and games until the party is over and every one go’s home. This is when the stakes are high and the teen bets he/she can get themself home safely. And so the teen gets in the car and drives, not even thinking of the ricks there taking. This can all lead to fines, suspension of license, or even death and jail time.
Teen are to blame as much as the adult is. When at parties, teens make the wrong choose to drink, weather by pressure or not. It is also the teens fault for choosing to drink alcohol and then getting into the car. Some of these teens engage in binge drinking while at these parties. Binge drinking has been defined as having 5 or more alcoholic drinks within a couple of hours (CDC). But where do teens get alcohol? Sometimes it’s even the parents who get the alcohol for their teens. Some parents are so desperate to be considered cool by their teens that they think the law doesn’t apply to them and get their kids alcohol (Cooke). This may not be the case every time, but the adult also demonstrates behaviors that can influence teens. Studies show that Parents are the ones who have the most influence on teens choose in drinking (Nationwide, and MADD).
There are different types of pressures when it comes to alcohol. One is silent and the other one more of a verbal one. In a verbal situation, one teen might be telling another to take a cup of alcohol and try it. At first the teen being asked might say no, but the one who’s offering might continue to pressure the teen. In a silent situation, a teen is at a party where he/she sees other teens drinking, no one will come to offer them any but the teen still feels the need to fit in. This is where the teen is to blame.
In 2010, 1 of 5 teen drivers involved in a fatal car accident had alcohol in their system (CDC). 85% of teens who report drinking and driving also say that they themselves binge drank (CDC). High school teens drive after drinking about 2.4 million times a month (CDC). This is where the teen’s bad choices come into play.
The adult side is also to blame. Children who see their parents drunk are twice as likely to regularly get drunk themselves (Hughes). Poor parental supervision also raises the likelihood of teenage drinking (Hughes). As mentioned before it’s sometime the parent who gets their teens alcohol. The parents do this to seem cool and win their teen’s appreciation and trust.
In South Carolina there are many penalties for underage drinking. If you’re under 21 your BAC only need to be .02% for you to receive a DUI. BAC stands for blood alcohol content and DUI stands for driving under the influence. Your BAC is what they check for when the police suspects you had too much to drink. For a first offence you receive a $400 fine, 6 month license suspension, minimum of 48 hours to 30 days of jail or 48 hours of public service. This is only with a BAC of .10% or less. (DrivingLaws.org)
Now it may be the teens fault more than the adults. It may be the adults fault more than the teens. The teen for making the wrong chooses. The adult for influencing those wrong chooses.
In the end I believe it is both the teen as much as the adults fault. The teen for making for making the wrong chooses and the adult for influencing them.
